Srinagar

The sweepers of the education department, zone Keegam Shopion on Thursday staged a protest at press enclave Srinagar against the education department demanding regularization.

The protestors shouting slogan, “we want justice”, said they are paid Rs 25 per month even as they work with the department since 1998.

“We are working in the department since 1998 on 25 rupees only,” said Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat a sweeper in the Pashpora Middle school, adding, “We are more beggars than sweepers as beggars earn their livelihood but we can’t feed even our children,” he lamented.

One of the protesting sweepers, Fayaz Ahmad, said, “We are more than 40 people who work in the education department on a paltry sum of Rs 25.

Three years ago the department promised us that their salary will be raised to Rs 4500 per month, however, they rued that nothing of that sort has happened till date.

The protestors before staging protests had approached the Minister for Education Altaf Bukhari who according to the protestors said, “Your order copy is nowhere.”

“We approached the education minister who told us that our order copies are not valid,” they said, however, “He assured us that he will look into the matter.”
