SRINAGAR: Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the State with religious fervour and gaiety, an official spokesman said. People in large numbers, clad in colourful dresses, were seen attending congregational prayers at Eidgahs, mosques and other places where speakers threw light on the philosophy of celebrating the Eid.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, joined hundreds of people to offer her Eid prayers at Ziyarat Hazrat Syed Sahib, Sonwar. She prayed for peace, prosperity and wellbeing of the people of the State on the occasion, the spokesman said.

After offering nimaz, Mehbooba Mufti interacted with the people and extended Eid greetings to them.

The spokesman said that people in large numbers later visited the Chief Minister at her residence and offered their Eid greetings. Thanking the visitors, the Chief Minister wished them well and hoped that the festival brings along limitless joy and happiness to the people of the State. Those who visited her included Ministers, legislators, public representatives, Government functionaries, prominent citizens, political workers and common people.

Earlier in the day, Ms Mufti visited Dara Shikoh Park at Bijbehara and offered fateha to former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.

National Conference

Former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah offered their Eid prayers at Hazratbal. The prayers there remained incident free, a senior NC leader said.

A statement issued by NC said its Provincial President Devender Singh Rana on Saturday exchanged Eid greeting with the people at Eidgahs in Sidhra and Nagrota, both falling in his constituency. He hoped this auspicious occasion will usher in peace and harmony and further strength the high values of the composite culture of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rana met the people and extended greetings to them on the joyous festival, hoping that this will be celebrated with fervor and gaiety. He prayed for peace and tranquility in the state.

On the occasion, MLA East Rajesh Gupta, Divisional Commissioner, Dr M K Bhandari, Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Dr S D Singh Jamwal, Deputy Commissioner, Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, ADC Dr Arun Manhas, besides other senior functionaries of police and civil administration were also present and exchanged Eid greetings with Muslim brethren and prayed for peace and tranquility in the State.

A spirit of festivity marked the celebrations, people exchanged greetings and large gatherings were seen at mosques which were decorated magnificently and the markets were abuzz with activity.

In Ramban, the spokesman said the biggest congregations took place at Jamia Masjid Sharif Ramban and Eid Gah Banihal where large number of devotes performed Nimaz-e-Eid and prayed for peace, development and prosperity of people.

The people exchanged wishes besides embracing one another. All elaborate security and other necessary arrangements were made by police and district and police for smooth celebration of Eid festival.

Various officers form administration were also present on the occasion. Eid Namaz was offered at other mosques of town and its outskirts including, mosques of Chandrog, Maitra and Upper Ramban.

The Deputy Commissioner, Ramban  Tariq  Hussain Ganai and SSP Ramban  Mohan Lal, ADC Angrez Singh, ASP Mushtaq Ahmed, Tehsildar Parmod Kumar, Dy. SP Traffic Madhan Mohan  along with officers of district administration extended  greetings to the Muslim brethren.

Mirwaiz Umar

A statement issued by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq’s Hurriyat Conference said that the government continued its oppressive policy of past seven years and placed him under house arrest late on Friday night at Nigeen residence which left majority of people who were waiting at Eidgah to listen to the Eid sermon of Mirwaiz, highly disappointed. The devotes expressed strong resentment over the detention of Mirwaiz on the occasion of Eid.

The incarcerated APHC chairman, however, addressed the Eid gathering over phone, and felicitated and greeted the people of Kashmir on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

Mirwaiz said the government continued its autocratic policy of oppression even on the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Azha as arrest and house detention of pro-freedom leaders continued unabated even on the occasion of holy festival.  He said such oppressive policy have failed and will continue to fail to muzzle the genuine dissent and the resolve of Kashmirs resistance leadership.

Condemning the repressive policies of the government that includes arrests, harassment and killing of innocents, Mirwaiz appealed the world human rights bodies to use their influence and build pressure on Delhi to stop committing war crimes in Kashmir.

Mirwaiz also presented the resolution framed by the Joint Resistance Leadership before the people and sought their unanimous support for its passage in the huge congregational Eid gathering.

Kargil

Reports from Kargil said the Eid was celebrated with full religious fervor and enthusiasm.

Eid prayers were offered by huge congregations everywhere, biggest of which was seen at Jama Masjid Kargil, Islamia School, Eidgah and Masjid Noorbakshia where thousands of Muslims offered special Eid Prayers.

The prayers were organized by Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust, Islamia School and Jammat -e -Ahle Sunnat Kargil, Anjuman Noorbakshia.

In Sankoo , Suru , Sharogole , Wakha , Drass and Zanaskar big gatherings were seen in different mosques.

During the prayers sermons were delivered in which Imams have offered special prayer for the peace in Iraq, Syria , Yemen , Bahrain , Myanmar and other parts of Islamic countries.

During the sermons in mosques Imams appealed for the peace and prosperity among Muslim ummah.
