SRINAGAR

The business in government offices was badly affected on Monday after the employees stayed away on the first day of the two-day strike called by Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), demanding immediate release of leaders arrested under Essential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA).

Eight government employee’s leaders including JCC president Abdul Qayoom Wani were arrested on Saturday, in Lal Chowk. They were later shifted to central Jail Srinagar.

Government employees allege that state authorities have failed to implement the agreements reached with them on their demands, which included increase in the retirement age from present 58 years to 60 years, regularissation of daily wager, constractuals and need based workers who have completed seven years in service.

Pertinently, the JCC has threatened to intensify the agitation if their leaders were not released by this evening and cases under ESMA withdrawn.
