One police man was killed when a mixed contingent of police and army had gone to raid a far-off forest belt in Sopore, police sources said.
Police in Srinagar had received information about the presence of militants in a remote belt of Sopore. Identified as Yemberzul Wadi, it is a remote bowl connecting Sopore with Bandipore. Marvel is the exact spot where the action was reported.
A police party from SOG Srinagar had reached Sopore late last evening. As per the system, they were joined by the cops from the host district and the army. During the night itself, they reached the spot where they had had specific information about the presence of four militants. They had cordoned off the area. Soldiers from 27-RR accompanied the raiding SOG>
“As our men reached the spot, the militants fled and while fleeing they opened fire on one of our men,” police sources told Kashmir Life. “He died almost instantly.”
The police source said the slain cop was evacuated from the spot but the search operation is still going on. He offered not many details.
An official in Srinagar said identified the slain cop as Mohammad Shafi, a resident of Kulgam. He said the fallen cop is being given a formal send off from the police control room at around noon. Top cops will be laying floral wreaths on his body.
