Rashid was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the 2017 terror funding case. During the hearing, he challenged a March 10 trial court order that denied him custody parole to attend the ongoing Lok Sabha proceedings.

In its March 17 reply to the appeal, the NIA argued that the accused could not use his status as an MP to avoid imprisonment. The agency contended that Rashid had no enforceable right to attend Parliament while in lawful custody and could not be granted interim bail or custody parole.

Rashid has been in Tihar jail since 2019 following his arrest in the case. On September 10, the trial court granted him interim bail to campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. His interim bail was later extended until October 28 due to his father’s health, after the NIA verified the documents and did not oppose the plea.
