SRINAGAR: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Saturday called for an impartial and transparent investigation into the killing of two non-local workers in Kulgam, while questioning why such attacks appear to coincide with renewed demands for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
Addressing reporters, Abdullah said the facts surrounding the incident were yet to be established and urged against reaching premature conclusions before the investigation is completed.
“It is unfortunate. We do not know who killed them, and we do not know why they were killed. The Kulgam attack needs an honest and impartial probe so that the truth comes out,” he said.
Abdullah said the timing of the attack had raised questions, noting that similar incidents seem to occur whenever the issue of restoring statehood gains prominence.
“I do not know why these attacks take place whenever we seek statehood. It raises questions, and therefore a fair investigation is essential to uncover the truth,” he said.
The National Conference leader stressed that those responsible for the killings must be identified and prosecuted, and said the inquiry should be conducted in a manner that inspires public confidence.
The killing of the two non-local workers in Kulgam has drawn condemnation from political parties across the spectrum, with several leaders calling for accountability and stronger measures to safeguard civilians and migrant workers in the Kashmir Valley.
