Fire broke out in an army camp of Sonarwani Bandipora area in north Kashmir resulting death of an officer and gutting of seven barracks.

Defense spokesperson in Srinagar Col. J S Brar confirmed the death of an officer and said that the fire broke out during the intervening night of 9 and 10 November due to electric shot circuit.

 Sources said that fire appeared in one of the barracks in Army’s 9 Para camp and gutted seven barracks. Lt. Colonel Saran Aptay of Gujarat was charred to death as he was sleeping in his room, they said.

“Other soldiers in the camp are safe,” sources added. They said that the camp suffered a huge loss due to fire and some arms and ammunition also got damaged. Army has initiated an inquiry into the incident
