The commercial Taxes Department personnel posted at Checkpost Lowermunda imposed a penalty of Rs.751120 on a Truck and foiled an attempt of tax evasion made by it Friday late night.

Sources said that a Vehicle No JK05A/6496 carrying 90 quintiles of Sugar for FCI and 7 boras Aluminum Bartan from M/S Sharma Metal Traders, Jammu was coming from Jammu to Srinagar. The vehicle was cleared at the check post after driver produced the documents of FCI sugar and Aluminum utensils. However after clearance the Truck was put to physical inspection thoroughly and it was detected that 2290 kilograms of copper scrape has been concealed in the truck and was kept between the sugar and aluminum utensils.

“The market value of the mixed copper scrape was assessed at Rs.938900.00,” sources said adding “Penalty provisions under sections 67(5), 67(10), 67(5)a & 69(1)O of J&K VAT Act.2005 were invoked in the case against the dealer and the driver of vehicle respectively.”

Commercial Taxes Officer, Check post Lowermunda, Abdul Hamid Ganai while confirming the incident and said that the whole operation was conducted in a very professional manner.  “Our staffers work and discharge the duties very responsibly even during these freezing temperatures during the night hours.”

He said that the total actual tax liability of this consignment was Rs.46945.00 and Rs.751120.00 has been imposed on dealer and driver of the vehicle. “It is a tough message for violators and if anybody will be found for violation or evasion of tax at this check post he will be dealt with iron hands,” he said.

“During the current fiscal total penalty of Rs.47.16 Lac and security of Rs.38.47 Lac has been imposed for various violations at the Commercial Taxes Check post Lowermunda,” he said.
