First Muslim lady who went to jail for her active participation in the separatist politics breathed her last at her Kishtwar residence late last night after a prolonged illness.

Parveena Begum Sheikh, wife of Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh, of Astanbala Kishtwar was arrested in Jammu in 1989 and was sent to jail for her active involvement in  separatist politics. She was later released on bail after spending more than 6 months in jail.

Parveena is survived by her husband, two daughters and two sons.

Amid strict curfew in the town, Parveena’s Nimaaz-e-Jinaza was allowed at Masjid Sharief Astanbala and later a sizeable number of people were allowed by the police for her burial at Kishtwar graveyard.
