At least eleven persons were injured after government forces on Sunday opened fire at mourners gathered for funeral prayers of Al Badr commander Zeenat ul Islam at Sugan village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

An eye witness said that the government forces have laid barricades on roads and even movement through orchards was halted to limit the number of people participating militant commander Zeenat ul Islam’s funeral.

However, he said, mourners continued to assemble in the village after making their way through alternative routes.

Soon after the forces resorted to aerial firing to disperse the people, an eye witness said, the youth pelted them with stones, triggering clashes resulting in injuries to several people.

Reports said that a girl identified as Shoky Jan got injured after hit by an army vehicle during clashes and was shifted to district hospital Shopian for treatment.

An official at district hospital Shopian said that two injured identified as Showkat Ahmad Dar and Irfan Ahmad of Gund Darvesh were shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

He said Showkat had bullet injury in his neck and hand while Irfan had bullet injury in his thigh.

Hospital sources in Pulwama said they received six injured persons. Some were hit by bullets while others had pellet injuries.

He said all the injured persons were shifted to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment.

Zeenat-ul-Islam alias Dr Usman and his associate were killed in a gunfight in Kathpora village in Yaripora. Zeenat-ul-Islam (30), listed in police records as category A++ militant and carried a bounty of Rs 12.5 lakh on his head.

According to police Zeenat-ul-Islam got affiliated with Al-Badr in 2006 and was later arrested.

However after he was released, he again got recycled in 2016 and subsequently got affiliated with HM and recently he joined Al-Badr outfit, said a police spokesman.

When last reports came in clashes were going on in the area.
