SRINAGAR

Former Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and religious scholar, Syed Nazir Ahmad Kashani passed away on Thursday morning in Srinagar after prolonged illness. He was 76.

Kashani was laid to rest at Bachpora in the city outskirts where thousands including Hurriyat leaders turned up for his funeral.

A number of religious, social and political organisations have expressed condolence on the demise of Kashani who was associated with the Jamaat during his entire life.

“The primary purpose of the Jamaat-e-Islami,” he once said in an interview, “is to invite all people, irrespective of their language, colour or nationality, to the path of Islam, by placing its message before them. To this end, we are committed to peaceful, overground means.”

Kashani was elected as the Ameer Jamaat in July 2003. He was known as moderate but enjoyed the confidence of Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
