SRINAGAR: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Thursday mourned the death of former Professor and Head of its Department of Medicine, Prof (Dr) Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, who passed away on October 1, 2026.

Prof Bhat was remembered by the institution as a physician, academician and teacher whose career was closely associated with medical education and clinical practice at GMC Srinagar.
The college said his teaching, particularly his theory and practical classes, remained a significant part of his contribution to generations of medical students and postgraduate trainees. He was known for linking clinical medicine with classroom teaching and emphasising the approach to patient assessment and clinical problem-solving.
Prof Bhat also contributed to medical education through his books on Emergency Medicine and Hypertension.
During his association with GMC Srinagar, he served in the Department of Medicine and later headed the department, contributing to the institution’s academic and clinical activities.
GMC Srinagar Principal and Dean Prof (Dr) Iffat Hassan expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said Prof Bhat’s death had left a void among his colleagues, students and patients. She acknowledged his contribution to the Department of Medicine and medical education at the institution.
Faculty members, administrative staff, residents, nursing and allied healthcare staff, students and other employees of GMC Srinagar also expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
The institution said Prof Bhat’s contribution would remain part of the institutional memory of GMC Srinagar, particularly through the students and colleagues he taught during his professional career.
