Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed, a Delhi High Court judge is expected to be the new Chief Justice of J&K. If everything goes as per the script, sources said, he will take over later March.

Mr Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, the incumbent Chief Justice of J&K High Court since February 2, 2015 is superannuating on March 14, 2017.

Justice Ahmad is the son of India’s former president Dr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

An economics lecturer in St Stephen’s College, Ahmad was enrolled as an advocate 1980. He was appointed a Judge of the Delhi High Court in December 2002. Prior to that, Ahmad was Secretary of Ghalib Institute, Delhi.

Justice Ahmad has a son and a daughter.

Informed sources said that Justice Ahmad, one of the senior most judges at the Delhi High Court, has consented to head the judiciary in J&K. It was only after that the Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India J S Khehar recommended his name to the law ministry. He has been acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court twice.
