SRINAGAR: National Conference MLA Abdul Majid Larmi on Tuesday raised the issue of frequent stoppages on the national highway in south Kashmir, saying the delays were causing difficulties for students, patients and other commuters.
Speaking in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Larmi said people travelling between Qazigund and Srinagar faced repeated disruptions that could affect their schedules and lead to missed examinations and flights.
“Those who travel from Qazigund to Srinagar face inconveniences. Students miss exams, travellers at times miss their flights,” he said.
Larmi was responding to concerns raised by PDP MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Parra over restrictions faced by commuters on the highway.
“Waheed Parra did not speak on the inconveniences faced by people of Kashmir on the national highway. He didn’t speak openly on it, but I will openly tell this House that students, patients suffer a lot,” Larmi said.
Earlier, Parra had told the Assembly that commuters were stopped on the highway for 10 to 15 minutes every day. He said such stoppages created a sense of discrimination among common people and urged the government to take up the matter with the Unified Headquarters.
“People are stopped every day for 10 to 15 minutes,” Parra said.
He also said security measures following an attack should not result in ordinary people being subjected to humiliation or a sense of discrimination.
The issue was raised during the ongoing autumn session of the JK Legislative Assembly.
