SRINAGAR

After the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed on Monday due to fresh snowfall, the met department has forecasted heavy snowfall in the next 24 hours.

The plains of Kashmir would witness moderate snowfall, whereas in the higher reaches of Kashmir the snowfall is expected to be heavy.

The Srinagar-Jammu highway has been closed because of more than three-feet deep snow in Bannihal and Batote areas, sources said adding that operations to clear the road will start only after the snowfall stops.

They added that continuing snowfall also resulted in poor visibility, leading to disruption of air traffic to and from the Kashmir valley.

Following the extended dry spell in January, the snowfall has brought relief to the people, especially farmers and orchardists.
