SRINAGAR: Postgraduate (PG) residents of Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara held a peaceful protest demanding an increase in their stipends, with the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) extending support to their demand.
The protesting doctors raised concerns over differences in stipends paid to PG residents in Jammu and Kashmir and other states, questioning why their remuneration was significantly lower than the amounts they said were being paid elsewhere.
AIMSA president Dr Mohammad Momin Khan expressed solidarity with the protesting residents and urged the government to address their demands without further delay.
He warned that PG residents from other government medical colleges across Jammu and Kashmir could also join the agitation if the government failed to respond to the issue.
AIMSA said it would continue to support the residents’ demand for equitable stipends, dignity and recognition of their services to the healthcare system. The association called on the government to take timely action to resolve the matter.
