For the second consecutive week, government on Friday disallowed congregational prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar as all the roads leading to the central Masjid were sealed to prevent protests against the killing of slain Lashkar chief Abu Ismail and his aide.
On Thursday, government detained Hurriyat (m) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. He addresses the devotees ahead of the congregational prayers.
Earlier, in the morning, government imposed restrictions in areas falling under the jurisdiction of five police stations in Downtown Srinagar to thwart protests against the killings of Ismail and his aide Abu Qasim. The duo was killed in a brief gunfight with forces in Nowgam area on the outskirts of Srinagar yesterday.
Mirwaiz has termed the lockdown as a move to break the resolve of people in Downtown Srinagar.
