Government Reconstitutes Press Council of India With 13 New Members

   

SRINAGAR: The government on Thursday reconstituted the Press Council of India (PCI), nominating 13 new members, including six editors and seven working journalists from other categories.

The reconstituted council is headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (retd) and comprises 14 members, including five MPs, six representatives of newspaper owners and three members representing the Bar Council of India (BCI), University Grants Commission (UGC) and Sahitya Akademi.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the new nominations have been made under the Press Council Act, 1978.

The six members nominated under the Working Journalists (Editors Category) are Pradeep Kumar Jain, Sayed Raza Husain Rizvi, Ankur Dua, Aparna Shukla, Raj Parwana/Narender Singh and Vinod Bajpai.

The seven members nominated under the Working Journalists (Other Than Editors) category are Vinod Kohli, Geetartha Pathak, Prajnananda Chaudhuri, Kingshuk Pramanik, C K Nayak, Prasanna Kumar Mohanty and Bijoy Kakchingtabam.

The PCI is a statutory autonomous body established under the Press Council Act, 1978. Its primary mandate is to safeguard press freedom and promote and maintain the standards of newspapers and news agencies in India.
