Expressing serious concern over the unabated killings and the treatment meted out to MLA Langate Er Rashid by police, Peoples Democratic Front president and MLA Khansahib Hakim Mohammad Yasin today said the present government has created an atmosphere of fear and and uncertainty in Kashmir.

“The killing of a Fisheries Department official, the killing of ex Sarpanch of Congress and humiliation and detention of Er Rashid point out that the present government has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in Kashmir,’ Hakim said in a statement. “This is unparalleled in the history of Kashmir as it seems there is no law and order in the state.”

Demanding a judicial probe into the killings, Hakim Yasin said, “Civilians are being killed day in and day out which is a cause of serious concern. The credibility of the institutions is being eroded and which becomes reason for further alienation of people.”

“Where is the government and for how long will this continue?” he asked. “The situation in the state was worsening day by day and the prevailing situation reminds of the 1990’s state of affairs.”

On the harassment and humiliation of Er Rashid, the PDF chief said, “In democracy there could be difference of opinion, but the way he (Rashid) was treated is unacceptable. A probe should be ordered and persons responsible for humiliating an Hon’ble MLA must be taken to task.”

The MLA Khansahib also criticised those leaders who were claiming to be the sole representatives of people of Kashmir. “People of Kashmir have been offering sacrifices right from 1947 cutting across the caste, creed and religion. However, some people try to take credit of it. Kashmir belongs to all Kashmiris so does the movement.”

He also urged the government to immediately stop the arrest spree in Kashmir and hold a judicial probe into the excesses committed during the five-month long unrest.
