SRINAGAR: Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone on Tuesday said the Jammu and Kashmir Government has acknowledged that the recent power tariff revision will result in an additional collection of Rs 251 crore from consumers.
Lone made the statement after the government responded to his question in the Legislative Assembly on the tariff revision and the installation of smart meters. His remarks were also posted on X.
According to Lone, the government has also informed the House that 11 lakh smart meters have been installed across Jammu and Kashmir since October 2024, when the present government took office.
Lone has repeatedly questioned the government over the National Conference’s pre-election promise to provide 200 units of free electricity to consumers in Jammu and Kashmir.
In its response in the Assembly on Tuesday, the government said the proposal to provide 200 units of free electricity was under examination.
The issue of free electricity and the impact of the revised tariff has been a recurring point of discussion between the government and opposition members in the Assembly, with Lone seeking clarification on the implementation of the electricity-related election commitment.
Lone said the government’s response on the additional revenue from the tariff revision and smart-meter installations had come in reply to his question.
