To ensure transparency in the distribution of ration under the National Food Safety Act (NFSA), the state government has decided to make availability of Aadhaar card and income certificate, issued by the Tehsildar, as mandatory for supplying the ration as per 2011 census.

A senior official of the CAPD department was quoted as having said that the said documents are necessary to overcome the duplicity while issuing the ration cards. “The Aadhaar card is a unique identification proof and issuing the ration cards on the basis of these Aadhaar numbers will ensure transparency.”

He further added, “we are seeking the income certificates issued by the Tehsildars as only a revenue official concerned and, not a CAPD official, can ascertain the income of a family.”

Pertinently, population whose annual income is over Rs 25 lakhs will not avail NFSA benefits.

The official apprehends that a large number of families would be excluded but as per 2011 census, the population which will be eligible for the subsidized ration will increase manifold in comparison to 2001 census. As per the 2011 census, the population of the state was 1.25 crore, which is over 30 lakh than the 2001 census.
