Expressing serious concern over what he called the growing immorality, liquor consumption, drug addiction, conversion and waywardness, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday termed the increasing social evils in Muslim majority Kashmir as a matter of great concern for which the people should come forward to address the menace.

Addressing a conference of life of Prophet Mohammad (SAW), here at Mirwaiz Manzil, the Hurriyat (M) chairman accused the state government particularly police for acting as a mute spectator to the growing menace of social evils in Valley.

He said: “Efforts are to make wine, which has been called as mother of all evils, a part of Kashmiri culture. Under the garb of promoting tourism in Valley, the vested interests are promoting a culture which is not a part of our ethos and is totally unacceptable to Kashmir,” Mirwaiz observed, adding that police’s cold shoulder approach to address this problem is further facilitating the social evils in Valley.

He also expressed concern over what he called the lack of interest to adopt and inculcate the religious obligations within the community. “We have suffered a lot during over two decades old conflict and instead of following the religious obligations and moral values strictly, our community seems going far from the values it inherited from its religion.”

He also alleged that state government promoting liquor and immoral culture at tourist destinations besides clubs that run in Valley. “Like in Kahsmir Golf Club,  Amar Singh Club and other such clubs besides tourist destinations, government patronizes liquor consumption and besides facilitating waywardness,” Mirwaiz observed.

“Similarly drugs and other narcotics are being made easily available to the youth, young boys and girls are allowed and encouraged to indulge in immoral activities at gardens and parks. All this is being done to make our society hollow and so that we lose our morals, values and traditions,” he added.
