A gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Bandipora district of north Kashmir on Sunday.

An official said a Joint team of Army, Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon-and-search-operation after “specific inputs” about presence of militants in area.

“As they approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter. Exchange of fire is going on,” he said.

While confirming the news police tweeted: ” #Encounter has started at #Bandipora. Further details shall follow.”
