Afzal Guru: A portrait click outside the court

Hailing Muhammad Afzal Guru for his “valour and commitment”, Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani on Thursday said that Guru emerged as an ideal, symbol of dedication and commitment.

In a statement issued here, the octogenarian leader said that nation today pays homage to the “valiant son of soil” and while referring to the last letter written by Muhammad Afzal Guru, said that it clearly illustrates that he was an ideological person and his emotions were backed by faith, intellect and conscience.

Reiterating his demand for the return of mortal remains of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat and Muhammad Afzal Guru, Geelani said, although it is purely a human issue, India is very reluctant to this demand thereby violating all the principles of ethics and human values.

Criticizing “state administration” for clamping curfew like restrictions, curbs, crackdown against resistance leaders and arresting Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai and scores of other activists, said that state authorities will have to face people’s “wrath and resentment” and all these “arbitrary arrests” are synonymous to disrespect for our “brave hearts”.

Geelani said that they “sacrificed” their precious lives for the better future of the nation. “He is an ideal and his determination and dedication set precedence for our young generation.”

Condemning the police action, Geelani said that it is “sheer bullying and highhandedness”.

Warning authorities for their “oppressive and suppressive” measures, he said that all these “arbitrary measures won’t deter us from pursuing our mission”, nor we will forget those valiant sons who have sacrificed their precious lives for a sacred cause and our better tomorrow.

India with its military might is desperate to suppress our mission but despite all this our next generations is more determined, vigilant and sensitive enough about freedom movement, he said.
