SRINAGAR: Police in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday detained a habitual drug offender under the provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act as part of an intensified crackdown on narcotics trafficking.
The detainee has been identified as Aurangzaib Bhat, son of Mohammad Akbar Bhat, a resident of Arwani in Bijbehara. According to police, he had been repeatedly involved in narcotics-related offences and continued to engage in illicit drug trafficking despite previous legal action.
Police said Bhat was involved in multiple cases registered at Police Station Bijbehara, including FIR No. 64/2013 under Section 8/15 of the NDPS Act, FIR No. 75/2025 under Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act, and FIR No. 43/2026 under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act.
In view of his alleged continued involvement in drug-related activities, police obtained a detention order from the competent authority under the PIT-NDPS Act to prevent him from further engaging in narcotics trafficking.
Following the completion of legal formalities and issuance of the requisite orders, the accused was detained and lodged in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, Jammu, police said.
Police reiterated their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and said stringent action would continue against those involved in the narcotics trade. They also appealed to the public to assist law enforcement agencies by sharing information related to drug peddling and substance abuse.
