In the encounter that started early morning in Hajin belt, two militants were killed. Identity of the slain militants was not known immediately.

Police said they had specific information about the presence of a group of Lashkar militants in the belt that they cordoned off the area during wee hours on Tuesday. The locality known as Boni Khun, is almost 3 kms from main Hajib habitation.

After an effective cordon when the counter-insurgency personnel started searches, they saw two youth fleeing out of the village and taking shelter in a nearby orchard. It was this orchard tat witnessed a quick encounter in which both the militants were killed.

Police said the operation was carried out by personnel from 13-Rashtriya Rifles and the SOG Bandipore. There is no report of any injury to any security men, police said.

Police said the slain militants are foreigners and presumed to be recruits of Lashkar-e-Toiba. They said they are in the process of identifying the slain duo.

This operation is the first after a long time because the counter-insurgency grid had stopped anti-militancy operations because of the mass protests.

After the operation was over, the locals were out on streets and protested.
