Handwara Massacre

Awami Ittihaad Party led by independent lawmaker, Er Rasheed Monday held a function to pay tribute to the January 1990 Handwara massacre victims.

The victims fell to the bullets of BSF personnel in Handwara on that day.

Speaking on the occasion, Rasheed accused the state of “hiding killers in uniform” and said, “use of brutal force against Kashmiris will not break their will and resolve in finding the peaceful solution to the Kashmir dispute.”

He said, “not even a single perpetrator has been taken to task and India still wants Kashmiris to forget everything, but it will never happen. Kashmiris strongly believe that whole of the J&K included other part under occupation of Pakistan is a disputed territory and the best and civilised way to resolve it is by implementing UN resolutions. Kashmiris are not enemies of India and Pakistan but cannot surrender their rights despite having sacrificed a lot and having a genuine case to plead.”

Rasheed demanded removal of army banker from main Chowk Handwara and alleged that it has become a “symbol of bitter memories” and is of no business to the army, except to “refresh the heinous tragedies”. “A unanimous resolution was adopted seeking withdrawal of army from engineering complex Handwara,” an AIP statement said.

The statement said that a procession was carried out which passed through the different markets of Handwara and ended at martyrs grave yard, where special prayers were held to pay homage to the martyrs.
