The appointment of Justice (Retd) Bashir Ahmad Kirmani as member of the Accountability Commission has left the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) headless.

SCDRC according to aggrieved people is readily accessible forum to settle disputes speedily without entailing any costs has become defunct from the day, its head left it. Since then government has not taken any step or has been seriously thinking about the appointment of its new head.

A delegation of Consumers told CNS that it is over a month now and the government has not appointed anybody as head of the SCDRC. “The headless SCDRC has been adding to consumers’ woes who have been visiting the office and eagerly waiting for disposal of their cases,” they said.

Consumer courts are to ensure fair play and save consumers from exploitation. Any person can go the consumer courts to seek compensation, refund or replacement of defected products. People can register complaint against any agency or trader, where monetary transaction is involved.

“It is obvious that by leaving SCDRC headless, the state government is defeating the very purpose of the Consumer Protection Act. This assumes graver proportions as a large number of people affected by the last year’s devastating floods have cases pending before the State Consumer Commission,” they added.

The consumers have appealed the government to fill the vacancy without any further delay so that their grievances are redressed at an earliest.
