SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Health Department on Saturday issued a public health advisory for residents across Kashmir, urging people to take precautionary measures against weather-related illnesses and accidents as heavy rainfall has affected several parts of the Valley over the past several days.
The department said the recent spell of heavy rain has led to waterlogging, rising water levels in rivers and streams, and an increased risk of flash floods, landslides and water-borne diseases. It appealed to the public to remain vigilant and follow all official weather updates and directions issued by district administrations and emergency response agencies.
People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly near rivers, streams, flood-prone areas, landslide-prone locations and waterlogged roads, until conditions improve.
To reduce the risk of diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid and hepatitis A and E, the department urged residents to drink only safe, boiled or chlorinated water, maintain proper hand hygiene by washing hands with soap before meals and after using the toilet, and consume only freshly prepared food while avoiding stale or contaminated items.
The advisory also called on parents to keep children away from floodwater and stagnant water to minimise the risk of infections, injuries and drowning.
Residents were advised to wear protective footwear while moving through wet or flooded areas to prevent skin infections and illnesses such as leptospirosis. The department also cautioned against electrical hazards, asking people to keep electrical appliances and wiring dry and avoid touching electrical equipment with wet hands or while standing in water.
Special care has been recommended for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, elderly people, young children and those suffering from chronic illnesses, as they face a higher risk of health complications during prolonged adverse weather.
The Health Department advised anyone experiencing fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, breathing difficulties, injuries or other serious health concerns to seek immediate medical attention.
Reiterating its appeal for public cooperation, the department urged residents to remain alert, keep emergency contact numbers readily available, prepare for any eventuality and prioritise health and safety until the prevailing weather conditions improve. It said timely precautions and adherence to official advisories can significantly reduce health risks during the ongoing spell of inclement weather.
