SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Department on Tuesday warned of heavy rainfall, flash floods and rain-induced flooding across parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next three days, placing South Kashmir and adjoining areas under an Orange Alert and advising people to strictly follow official weather advisories.
MeT Director Mukhtar Ahmad said a weather advisory had already been issued as heavy rainfall had been recorded across several parts of the Union Territory, particularly along the Pir Panjal range in the Jammu division. Heavy showers were also witnessed across parts of Kashmir on Monday morning.
He said cloudy weather accompanied by light showers is expected over the coming days, while Tuesday morning and around noon are likely to witness low to moderate rainfall across many areas. Some places in the Jammu division may also receive heavy rainfall.
Mukhtar Ahmad said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across Kashmir on Tuesday and Wednesday, with South Kashmir and adjoining areas likely to receive the most intense showers.
He warned that the forecast rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods and rain-induced flooding. Landslides and mudslides are also highly likely in hilly areas, he said.
The MeT Director advised tourists and transporters to exercise caution while travelling and remain updated with the latest weather advisories. He also urged people to strictly follow official advisories to avoid any untoward incidents.
Ahmad further advised that irrigation activities should remain suspended for the next few days in view of the prevailing weather conditions.
He said South Kashmir and adjoining areas have been placed under an Orange Alert for flood risk, while some parts of North Kashmir are also under an Orange Alert.
The prevailing weather conditions are expected to continue until July 23.
