SRINAGAR: The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, Kashmir, on Monday issued a public advisory warning of possible flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels across South Kashmir following the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of heavy rainfall over the Jhelum basin.
According to the advisory issued by the Chief Engineer, I&FC Kashmir, a strong spell of rainfall is expected during the morning of July 21, with 50–100 mm of rainfall likely in the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian. Another spell of lighter rainfall is also expected during the morning of July 22.
The department said the forecast raises the likelihood of flash floods, particularly in the higher reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir. Water levels are also expected to rise rapidly in channels, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, besides major tributaries and the River Jhelum.
In view of the forecast, the I&FC Department has advised people, especially residents of South Kashmir, to stay away from rivers, nallahs, water channels and other flood-prone locations.
The advisory also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas to minimise the risk of loss of life or property.
Residents living in low-lying areas have been asked to remain vigilant, take all necessary precautions, and keep themselves updated with the latest weather forecasts and flood advisories issued by the authorities.
The advisory, issued by Chief Engineer Er Showkat Hussain, has been circulated to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Deputy Commissioners of all districts in the Kashmir Valley, the IMD Srinagar office and other concerned departments for necessary action and preparedness.
