Normally, the water level remains below 9 feet. However, a couple of days before the G20 event in Srinagar, the water level rose above 10 feet and has not been reduced since then.

According to residents, if the water level continues to increase, dozens of vegetable gardens located in the lake will be damaged.

The Dal dwellers have alleged that the increase in water level is an attempt to conceal the pollution levels in the water body.

“When the water level is high, it not only hides pollutants like weeds but also poses a risk to tourists,” stated a local resident from Dal Lake. Another resident mentioned that they have raised the issue with top officials, who claimed that the water level was raised under the directions of the Vice Chairman of Lakes and Conservation Management.

When contacted, an official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, acknowledged that the water level is slightly higher than normal and should be reduced. He further stated that the decision to address this matter rests with the Vice Chairman. [KNT]
