A student procession disrupted the movement of the routine traffic on highway near Umar Abad, HMT triggering a massive traffic jam. A north Kashmir bound convoy opened fire in air to clear the highway but failed, reports said.

Students of local higher secondary school had come out in a demonstration and started moving on the road. It had slowed down traffic. Later they resorted to some stone pelting on a convoy on way to north Kashmir that has fired several rounds in air. There has not been any loss of life. However, after the firing, the students have stopped moving and instead sat on the highway somewhere close to Noora Hospital. This has clogged the highway.

Police sources confirming the incident said local officers trekked to the spot and cleared the highway. The students have moved out of the highway and the traffic is plying normally.

The incident coincided with the day one of the durbar re-opening in Srinagar has delayed commuters, especially the state government employees, for more than an hour.
