People of Shunby area of Kargil are being harassed police, civil administration and locals of Himachal Pradesh, assembly was informed on Wednesday.

Giving details, Kargil Lawmaker, Asgar Karbalai said that Shunby is an area situated along highway connecting Zanskar with Manali (HP).

“The locals of Shunby are facing atrocities from people of Himachal Pradesh, who along with the local police force dismantle the tea stalls and other shanty structures, which Shunby people use to run their small business,” Karbalai told Kashmir Life on Thursday.

“The area witnesses rush of tourists throughout the year, which is a good opportunity for the locals to earn good bucks,” Asgar said. “But the people from Himachal Pradesh come in jeeps with the support of Himachal Police and their destroy stalls.”

“After destroying business of our people, the HP men install their own stalls,” he claimed. He alleged that local administration was silent on the issue.

Asgar further added that Ladakh’s two development authorities: Kargil Development Authority and Zanskar Development Authority have not been receiving funds for last 5 years, despite the fact that Ladakh has a high tourist potential.

Asgar suggested the assembly that the lush green Musk valley that falls between Gurez and Drass should be made a tourist destiny.

He said that Kargil is home to largest glaciers and best peaks including Nun and Kun that is the highest Himalayan peak.

Besides, Ladakh is a multi-religious division which has a good scope of religious tourism as well.

“Dropati Kul situated in Mataieen, 80 km from Kargil, falling in between Baltal and Drass should be made another destination tourist destination,” he demanded.
