“The Hizbal Mujahideen District commander, Shabir Ahmad Bhat alias Adil resident of Hayan, who was killed yesterday in Tral, encounter was involved in a number of murders,” a police statement said on Tuesday.

The statement added that he was involved in the killing of Manzoor Ahmad Keeli  alias Man Keeli in 2009, Ghulam Mohideen Bhat, a political worker in Pinglish Tral, in 2011.

According to police he was also involved in the IED blast at Nawdal, road attempting to kill police officers and he was involved in the firing on a civilian Abdul Rashid Gojjar at Machama.

Police said that Shabir Ahmad Bhat was also behind the arson of AR cable network in 2011.

The police statement added that other two militants have been identified as Shahnawaz Mir alias Tahir Khan of Dadsar, Tral and Aijaz Laway alias Majid of Lurgam, Tral killed in the encounter.

Both of them had joined HM in 2011. Shahnawaz was one of the militants who had escaped from an encounter as Busoo, Tral on May24, 2013.

Police said that on specific information a joint team of Awantipora police, CRPF and Army cordoned off a house in Mandoora village of Tral, yesterday. While the cordon was being laid militants hiding in the house fired, triggering an encounter. Two policemen and two CRPF personnel were injured in the initial gunfight. While one of the injured constables Mushtaq died on the spot, the other three were shifted to the hospital.

The encounter continued till yesterday afternoon, the house in which militants were hiding got damaged. 3 AK riffles,4 magazines, 10 AK rounds were recovered from the encounter site. Police said.

Police concluded that in the last month or so, five encounters took place in south Kashmir in which nine militants including divisional commander of JeM and District commanders of HM were killed.
