SRINAGAR: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Monday visited notable landmarks in Srinagar, including the historic Clock Tower at Lal Chowk and the Balidan Stambh at Pratap Park. These visits came after he chaired a high-level security review meeting at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) to assess the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir as the region enters the winter season.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, central security agencies, and intelligence services. Discussions centred on enhancing security measures to manage challenges posed by snowfall in higher reaches and to ensure preparedness for the influx of winter tourists. Officials highlighted the risk of increased infiltration attempts across the Line of Control (LoC) due to reduced visibility and snow cover, which could provide opportunities for militants.
A senior police official stated that advanced surveillance technology and stepped-up patrols are being utilised to counter infiltration. “Snowfall complicates ground operations, but we are prepared to address these challenges and ensure no lapses in security,” the official said. Emphasis was also placed on securing popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg, which are expecting large crowds for winter carnivals and skiing activities. Authorities are focusing on inter-agency coordination to ensure safety for both locals and visitors.
The Home Secretary’s visit to Lal Chowk’s Clock Tower was symbolic, reflecting the site’s historical and political significance. Similarly, the Balidan Stambh, inaugurated earlier this year by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, serves as a tribute to the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. Situated in Pratap Park, the memorial underscores the resilience and dedication of the armed forces.
The security review meeting also addressed broader concerns, including counter-insurgency efforts and border surveillance. A senior army official noted that the LoC remains under constant monitoring to prevent infiltration. “Our forces are actively managing both security challenges and insurgency concerns,” he said.
This comprehensive approach aims to ensure a secure and vibrant winter season, balancing the region’s tourism potential with the need to address ongoing security challenges. (With KINS inputs)
