The presence of rodents has raised serious concerns among patients, who have questioned the hospital’s hygiene, patient safety, and overall health standards.

A viral picture on social media, showing at least five rats on two hospital beds, has sparked outrage among netizens, who have demanded immediate action.

“I am a witness to this situation. No matter how much you deny, that is a pathetic hospital with pathetic management,” wrote one user reacting to the viral image.

“It is 100 per cent correct. I was in the hospital at 12 pm, got frightened, and left immediately,” commented another.

An official at GMC Anantnag acknowledged the issue, stating that heavy snowfall may have driven rodents into the hospital in search of food. “We want to clarify that the situation is being effectively managed by our administration,” he said.

“The rodents likely entered the premises due to snow-covered surroundings, seeking food and shelter. Unfortunately, the practice of attendants consuming meals near patient beds and improperly disposing of food waste has exacerbated the problem,” the official added.

He assured that immediate steps are being taken, including trapping rodents, initiating a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection drive, and deploying housekeeping staff to maintain high standards of hygiene.

“We request the public to trust our commitment to providing quality healthcare in a safe and clean environment. We appreciate the cooperation of patients, attendants, and the general public in addressing this issue,” he added.

Principal GMC Anantnag, Dr Rukhsana Najeeb, told KNO that a committee has been formed to investigate the matter, with a report expected within 24 hours.

She explained that a contract with a rodenticide company is currently active but nearing expiration. The company has been directed to address the issue urgently.

“I have instructed the administration to ensure such incidents do not recur and to prioritise patient safety. Action will be taken against any official found negligent in their duties,” she said.

Dr Najeeb emphasised the importance of sanitation, stating, “There will be stricter measures to ensure proper hygiene, and we request cooperation from patients and attendants in this regard.” (KNO)
