The Hurriyat leaders of are likely to attend the Pakistan Day function at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on March 23.

Sources said that Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani and Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq among others are expected to be present at the event.

This follows the meeting between Geelani and Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit in New Delhi earlier on March 9.

Basit and Geelani had reportedly discussed political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Pakistani envoy also appraising the separatist leader of Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar’s visit to Islamabad.

Pakistan Day commemorates the Lahore Resolution of 1940 and the adoption of the first constitution of the country during its transition into a Republic on March 23, 1956.

Sources said that representatives of the third faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Shabir Shah will also attend the function.

They added that Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has extended invitations to all leading separatist leader including JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, many advocates, intellectuals and other people of many walks of life.

According to sources a meeting between the separatist leaders and Pak High Commissioner is scheduled after the function ends.

Pertinently, New Delhi had cancelled Secretary level talks with Islamabad in late 2014 in protest against a meeting between Kashmiri separatist leaders and Pakistan High Commissioner.
