Scores of truck drivers blocked Sonamarag-Kargil road in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Friday after Army personnel on road duty allegedly thrashed a truck driver without any provocation.

Agitated truck drivers told CNS that that Army personnel on road duty stopped a loaded truck (JK13-7789) heading towards  Kargil near Bajri Nallah, Zojila on the pretext that the driver Abdul Hamid Itoo proceeded without waiting for their signal. “I simply told them every vehicles moves ahead without waiting for their signal. They dragged me out from the truck and thrashed me ruthlessly. When I resisted they beat me with gun butts and tore my clothes,” Itoo told CNS.

Another truck driver, Mushtaq Ahmed Akhoon alleged that Army personnel tried to throw Itoo deep down the gorge.

Scores of truck drivers assembled near Bajri Nallah and blocked the road. A police party rushed to the spot and informed the Commanding Officer of Alpha Sector. Reports said that Commanding Officer visit the spot and assured the truck drivers that stern action would be taken against the guilty Army personnel.

Incharge Traffic Police Sonamarag, Manzoor Ahmed confirmed to CNS that driver was beaten to pulp without any provocation.

“Their officer has assured us that he would take action against the erring Army personnel,” he said.
