Police resorted to heavy tear gas shelling when agitated youth pelted stones on the cavalcade of Minister for Higher Education Mohammad Akbar Lone in North Kashmir’s Hajin area of Bandipora. The Minister was in the area to condole the demise of a political activist.

According to reports, Minister for Higher Education arrived in Hajin to condole the demise of political activist Mushatq Ahmed Ganaie. “As his cavalcade reached near Shah-Gund Hajin, scores of youth present alongside the road resorted to stone pelting and smashed the window panes of some of his vehicles,” one of the eyewitnesses told CNS adding that youth chanted pro freedom slogans.

Reports said that the security guards of the Minister resorted to heavy tear gas shelling to disperse the youth. “Police, security guards and CRPF retaliated and fired tear smoke shells. However, the youth continued to pelt stones on the cavalcade. To give safe passage to the Minister, his guards went for aerial firing,” eyewitness said.

Reports said that stone pelting teargas shelling continued for hours even after the cavalcade of the Minister left from the area.

When contacted, Mohammad Akbar Lone told CNS that some youth hooted at him. “No, no nothing happened. Some youth hooted at me,” he said. When asked whether they were Peoples Democratic Party supporters, Lone said, “no, they were not PDP supporters,”.
