SRINAGAR: The Indian Army has added the Black Hornet Nano drone to its fleet, a tiny yet advanced surveillance tool aimed at enhancing border security, especially along the sensitive areas near Pakistan. The drone, which was showcased during the 9th Veterans Day event at the Tanda Artillery Division in Akhnoor, Jammu, is designed to help thwart infiltration attempts and keep a close watch on enemy movements.
Weighing only 18 grams and measuring just 16 cm in length and 2.5 cm in width, the Black Hornet Nano is one of the smallest military drones in use today. Its compact size and quiet operation make it nearly undetectable, offering soldiers a discreet way to gather intelligence. The drone is equipped with two cameras and can enter tight spaces, such as militant burrows, to capture valuable surveillance footage.
The Black Hornet Nano drone is particularly useful for providing immediate situational awareness in volatile areas. It can be carried in a soldier’s utility belt and deployed quickly, with minimal training required. The drone’s low noise levels allow it to fly undetected during operations, enabling the Indian Army to monitor the positions of militants without alerting them.
This micro UAV, developed by Prox Dynamics AS of Norway, has already been adopted by several nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and India. It offers real-time video and still images via a small camera and can be flown in different conditions, including night operations, with a range of up to 1.6 km.
