Taking to social media platform X, President Trump stated that the agreement came after a long night of US-mediated talks. He congratulated both nations for what he termed “common sense and great intelligence,” praising the leadership for choosing the path of peace.

He posted, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

In a special briefing on Operation Sindoor, Foreign Secretary of India said, “At 15:35 hours this afternoon, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart. It was mutually agreed that all military actions—whether on land, in the air, or at sea—would cease with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today. Orders have been issued on both sides to implement this understanding immediately. The DGMOs are scheduled to hold another round of talks on the 12th of May at 1200 hours to review the situation.”

The announcement comes amid a sharp escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours, marked by cross-border shelling, drone strikes, and military mobilisation over the past week. Civilian casualties, damage to property, and mounting fears of a wider conflict had prompted urgent calls for de-escalation from global powers.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a social media post stated that over the past 48 hours, he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged in high-level talks with senior Indian and Pakistani leaders, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Chiefs of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. Rubio confirmed that both governments had agreed to an immediate ceasefire and would begin dialogue on a broad range of issues at a neutral venue. He praised the two leaders for their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”

Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Ishaq Dar confirmed about the ceasefire in a post on X. He said, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
