SRINAGAR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday that India’s ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII) has risen from 91st to 38th over the past decade, reflecting significant strides in innovation and technology, as reported by NDTV.
Shah expressed optimism that India would secure a spot in the top 10 within the next three years, driven by continued investments in research and development.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi, as per The Hindu, Shah highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to innovation, emphasising initiatives such as the Atal Innovation Mission and the National Policy on Electronics. These policies have been designed to bolster India’s capabilities in technology, entrepreneurship, and digital infrastructure.
“The government’s focus on strengthening education, enhancing infrastructure, and encouraging public-private partnerships has laid the foundation for India’s rise in global innovation rankings,” Shah stated. He also credited the growing startup ecosystem, which has been crucial in propelling India’s innovation landscape.
The Global Innovation Index, which ranks economies based on their innovation capabilities, considers factors like research, infrastructure, human capital, and business sophistication. India’s rise from 91st in 2015 to 38th in 2025 marks an exceptional improvement, outpacing many other economies.
Experts believe the country’s focus on emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and renewable energy, will play a pivotal role in further advancing its position in the coming years. Shah’s statement has garnered widespread praise, with industry leaders expressing confidence in India’s continued growth as a global innovation hub.
The minister’s remarks come amid increasing efforts by the government to establish India as a leader in the global digital economy. Despite challenges, including access to quality education in rural areas and regulatory hurdles, India’s innovation trajectory appears promising, with an eye on the top ranks of the Global Innovation Index by 2028.
