Intense clashes between protesters and government forces erupted in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday near a gunfight site.

An eyewitness said that soon after the encounter in Sangran village of the district started, people especially youth took to streets and pelted government forces with stones to sabotage their operation.

Forces fired tear smoke shells to disperse them and clashes were underway when reports last came in. Pertinently, the internet services in the district have also been snapped as a “precautionary measure”.

The gunfight began after a joint team of army’s 34RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off Sangran in wee hours. As the joint team of intensified searches towards the suspected house, the hiding militants inside the house fired upon government forces triggering an encounter.
