Iran Claims Fresh Strikes on US Military Bases in Gulf Region

SRINAGAR: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Thursday claimed it had launched missile and drone strikes against United States military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation for recent American air strikes, according to a statement broadcast by the state television network IRIB.

According to the IRGC, the strikes targeted “key infrastructure and facilities” at the Arifjan and Ali Al Salem bases in Kuwait, and the Juffair and Sheikh Isa bases in Bahrain. The force said the attacks involved a combination of missiles and drones.

The IRGC also warned that its retaliatory operations would be expanded to include other US military installations across the region if Washington carried out further attacks.

The latest escalation follows fresh US air strikes on Iran earlier on Thursday, after which Tehran said it launched retaliatory attacks targeting American military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

According to the reports, the renewed exchange of attacks has further undermined efforts to preserve an interim agreement aimed at paving the way for an end to the conflict in the Persian Gulf.

The developments came hours after US President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz signalled the end of the fragile ceasefire. According to the reports, the United States had earlier launched strikes on military positions and port facilities following Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels off the coast of Oman.
