National Conference legislators from South Kashmir on Saturday lashed out at PDP President and Member of Parliament for South Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti for holding meetings pertaining to her Assembly Segment in Srinagar and said this was a “clear indication of the Member of Parliament’s shocking disconnect with her constituents”.
NC Leaders MLA Pahalgam Altaf Kaloo, MLA Homshalibug Abdul Majeed Larmi, MLC Dr Bashir Ahmed Veeri and MLC Showkat Ahmed Ganai condemned the convening of the District Electricity Committee (DEC) meeting to review the progress of Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) in Islamabad, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian districts of South Kashmir at SKICC in Srinagar instead of Islamabad.
“What is the purpose of summoning of legislators and officers concerned from South Kashmir Parliamentary Segment to Srinagar? Why is Mehbooba Mufti so petrified at the very thought of visiting her own Parliamentary Constituency or has she already started behaving like a Chief Minister instead of a Member of Parliament? The NC Legislators condemned the Member of Parliament for her tyrannical and improper conduct and said this doesn’t auger well for the spirit of representative democracy and came with a risk of alienating people in South Kashmir,” the NC Legislators said in a joint statement issued on Saturday.
“Mehbooba Mufti’s and her party’s arrogance could come at a cost of political chaos and confusion in the State which would adversely affect the dispensation of governance. The party’s own MLA from Karnah has expressed his utter disappointment at the complete disconnect between the Administration and the people. Another MLA from Kupwara has expressed his dismay and helplessness at the continued interference into his work as the local MLA by a PDP Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. All of this doesn’t auger well for democracy and clearly creates serious friction and confrontation in the system,” they said.
“We advise Mehbooba Mufti should wait to become the Chief Minister before absolving herself of her duties towards her constituents in South Kashmir as their Member of Parliament. Legislators from South Kashmir cannot be summoned by Mehbooba Mufti to Srinagar thereby preventing them from dispensing their duties to their respective constituents. While Mehbooba Mufti is scared of visiting her own Parliamentary Segment, we have to work for the people and have to serve them in our respective areas.”
