SRINAGAR: Automobile retail in Jammu and Kashmir surged 42.84 per cent year-on-year in August 2026, with 21,788 vehicles sold compared to 15,253 units in August 2025, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) J&K.
The growth was broad-based across all major automobile categories, with passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and construction equipment recording particularly strong gains.
Passenger vehicle retail rose 54.81 per cent, increasing to 6,191 units in August from 3,999 units a year earlier. Two-wheeler sales grew 36.28 per cent to 12,579 units from 9,230 units.
Three-wheeler retail recorded a 64.68 per cent increase, with 1,655 units sold against 1,005 in August 2025, while commercial vehicle sales rose 29.23 per cent to 977 units from 756 units.
The construction equipment segment recorded the highest percentage growth, though from a small base, with sales more than doubling to 39 units from 18 units, registering a 116.67 per cent increase. Tractor sales also remained strong, rising 41.63 per cent to 347 units from 245 units.
On a month-on-month basis, total automobile retail increased from 21,124 units in July 2026 to 21,788 units in August, a growth of about 3.1 per cent.
FADA J&K Chairperson Sanjay Aggarwal described the August performance as encouraging, saying the 42.84 per cent annual growth indicated stronger consumer confidence and improving economic activity across the Union Territory.
“We are particularly encouraged to see that growth has been recorded across all major segments,” Aggarwal said, pointing to the performance of passenger vehicles and two-wheelers as well as the growth in three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors.
The industry expects demand to strengthen further during the forthcoming festive and marriage seasons, with Navratras, Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali traditionally generating higher consumer spending and vehicle purchases.
Aggarwal said passenger vehicles and two-wheelers were likely to benefit particularly from increased demand during the festive and marriage periods, while commercial vehicles and three-wheelers could gain from higher economic and commercial activity.
Dealers across J&K are preparing for increased customer enquiries and showroom footfall, with manufacturers and dealerships expected to offer festive campaigns, financing schemes and other incentives.
The FADA J&K chairperson, however, struck a cautiously optimistic note, saying the combination of the festive and marriage seasons could help sustain the strong year-on-year momentum and offset some of the recent month-on-month softness.
