SRINAGAR: The Jammu divisional administration has been placed on alert following forecasts of heavy rainfall and a heightened risk of cloudburst-induced flash floods, mudslides and landslides in upper catchment areas, with authorities reiterating safety advisories ahead of the expected weather activity.
According to the Meteorological Department, intermittent rain is expected across parts of Jammu and Kashmir from July 31 to August 3, while heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the Jammu division. The wet spell may continue until August 4, although the department said continuous rainfall across the region is not expected.
The MeT Department said late-night and early-morning heavy showers are likely in Rajouri, Poonch, the Chenab Valley region, Jammu, Reasi and Udhampur. It cautioned that intense localised downpours could trigger flash floods, while isolated cloudburst events cannot be ruled out. Vulnerable hilly areas also face the risk of landslides and shooting stones.
The administration has urged residents, commuters and travellers to remain vigilant and follow official advisories, particularly in areas prone to flooding and slope failures.
Weather conditions remained variable across the Jammu region on Thursday, with intermittent light and scattered showers accompanied by sunny intervals during the day before skies turned heavily overcast in the evening.
Heavy rain lashed parts of Rajouri and Poonch districts, triggering flash floods in some areas, including Mendhar. Brief spells of heavy rain were also reported from R.S. Pura, Arnia and adjoining parts of Jammu district.
During the past 24 hours, light showers were recorded in Udhampur, Bhaderwah, Banihal, Batote, Kishtwar and Doda.
The Meteorological Department said intermittent showers are expected to continue until August 2, while stressing that the threat of flash floods from intense localised rainfall remains high despite the absence of a forecast for prolonged rain.
