SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has registered 1,611 new multipurpose PACS, dairy and fisheries cooperative societies under the Government of India’s plan to establish such cooperatives across panchayats and villages, according to the Ministry of Cooperation.
Of the total in Jammu and Kashmir, 232 are Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), 1,339 are dairy cooperatives and 40 are fisheries cooperatives, according to data from the National Cooperative Database cited by the Ministry in a Rajya Sabha reply on Wednesday.
Ladakh has registered seven new cooperative societies under the initiative, comprising three PACS, three dairy cooperatives and one fisheries cooperative.
Together, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh account for 1,618 of the 38,138 new PACS, dairy and fisheries cooperative societies registered across the country since the plan was approved on February 15, 2023. The data is updated to July 15, 2026.
Jammu and Kashmir’s total of 1,611 new cooperatives places it among the higher-performing States and Union Territories under the initiative, ranking 10th nationally by total registrations. It has also registered more new dairy cooperatives than all but four States—Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The Government of India has approved a five-year plan to establish new multipurpose PACS, dairy and fisheries cooperatives with the objective of covering all panchayats and villages across the country. The initiative is being supported by NABARD, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and State and Union Territory Governments, the Ministry of Cooperation said.
Nationally, 10,230 new PACS, 25,552 dairy cooperatives and 2,356 fisheries cooperatives have been registered under the initiative, taking the total to 38,138.
Rajasthan recorded the highest number of new cooperative societies at 5,329, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 6,328 and Bihar with 4,561, while Madhya Pradesh registered 2,284. Odisha recorded 2,609, Maharashtra 1,602 and Karnataka 1,581.
The Ministry said the data on the formation of new cooperatives was provided from the National Cooperative Database. The figures were disclosed by Union Minister for Cooperation Amit Shah in response to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1124.
