SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a steady rise in electric vehicle (EV) adoption under the Centre’s flagship electric mobility schemes, with the Union Territory receiving support for 15,940 electric vehicles under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme and 7,653 EVs under FAME-II, according to information tabled in the Lok Sabha.
Replying to a starred question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said the PM E-DRIVE Scheme has supported the sale of 26,54,172 electric vehicles across the country as of July 22, 2026, while Jammu and Kashmir accounted for 15,940 of these vehicles.
The minister informed Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir has also been allocated 200 electric buses under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme as part of the nationwide allocation of 14,000 e-buses.
Under the earlier FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) Scheme, which concluded in March 2024, 7,653 electric vehicles were supported in Jammu and Kashmir, while 200 electric buses have already been deployed in the Union Territory.
The government further stated that 76 public EV charging stations have been installed in Jammu and Kashmir under the FAME-II scheme. In neighbouring Ladakh, 13 charging stations have been established.
Nationally, the Centre said the FAME-I Scheme (2015-2019) supported 2,81,412 electric and hybrid vehicles, including 518 in Jammu and Kashmir. Under FAME-II (2019-2024), 16,71,606 EVs were supported, 5,297 electric buses deployed, and 9,583 public charging stations installed across the country.
The minister said the PM E-DRIVE Scheme (2024-2028) has so far released and utilised Rs 2,322 crore out of its Rs 10,900 crore allocation. The scheme has already supported over 26.54 lakh EVs, while 14,000 electric buses have been allocated nationwide.
The government clarified that no state-wise allocation of funds has been made under FAME-I, FAME-II or PM E-DRIVE, as all three schemes are implemented on a pan-India basis.
To promote domestic manufacturing, the Centre said Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) norms have been made mandatory under FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE, encouraging indigenous production of electric vehicles, battery packs and related components.
The government also said Rs 2,000 crore has been earmarked under PM E-DRIVE for establishing EV public charging infrastructure across the country, although no state-wise or district-wise targets have been fixed under the scheme.
